Mc Dowell Mountain Regional Park, Fountain Hills AZ
Before I go any further I have to wonder about the crazy “Zonies”.  Why do they walk around town with guns strapped to their hips? Who do they think is going to attack? Yes, it is legal here and they LOVE to exercise that legal right. Too much sun I think.

Mc Dowell was a beautiful park.  Fountain Hills is a beautiful city. Our son Garrett and the wonderful woman I will now refer to as my “daughter-in-law, the snake wrangler”, Carrie, live in a beautiful home.  Our visit here was all about spending time with them.  Carrie  is a fabulous cook had us over for a wonderful meal our first night.  The following day they came over to the park and we took a nice easy hike.  Garrett was in the lead watching for snakes and Carrie was like having a tour guide of the Sonoran Desert.  She is a true desert girl and desert lover and very knowledgeable about the flora and fauna. A nice lunch back in the motorhome and they headed  for home while we took care of banking and groceries.
Carrie is also a business owner so we went to see her new office, drove over to Sheriff Joe’s house (yes, he lives in Fountain Hills), did a bit of sight seeing and landed back at their house.  So now you have to be wondering why I call her the “snake wrangler”.  Some time back a beautiful (non poisonous) snake made it’s way into their house.  One of the dogs is snake trained and had been trying to tell them all day but they just wondered why she was acting so weird. When Garrett came home from work around 1am ( for those that don’t know he is a photo-journalist for NBC in Phoenix) he spotted it laying near the dogs food dish.  It was a good size snake.  He grabbed his camera, woke up his beloved Carrie and the fun began.  While no one is really fond of snakes in the house Garrett takes after his father in that he REALLY isn’t fond of them anywhere much less in the house!  Carrie, in her pj’s, got the pool skimmer and while Garrett had the camera rolling proceeded to wrangle the snake. It was not an easy job and it took a while and there were a number of screams and some jumping on the dining table…but she was successful.  Garrett interviewing her the entire time like the calm  professional that he is.  It was Emmy winning in my opinion.
It was a great visit and it looks like they may hook up with us again at the end of our trip in Lake Havasu and again at Thanksgiving in Borrego Springs.  We can’t wait!
Off to Homolavi Ruins State Park……

Mt. Lemmon

A beautiful drive up to Mt. Lemmon took us out of the heat of Tucson to the cool of the mountains.  From flat and hot desert to hilly saguaro studded mountains then on up to Arizona's Hoo-Doos and finally the pine forest. It was about 25 degrees cooler and a welcome relief.  The very small town of Summerhaven was devasted several years ago when the Aspen fire took out 320 homes and the entire town.  Now there are some charred trees still standing and a lot of rebuilding.  The general store had every kind of fudge you could imagine and we sampled and bought and will enjoy some tonight for dessert! Tomorrow is laundry day as we prepare to leave Tucson on Wednesday.  We'll try to spend a bit of time downtown as well seeing some of the things we missed the first day we were here.

Rufus on Mt Lemmon

Saguaro National Park
We waited  until it was 90 degrees to visit this park full of, you guessed it, Saguaros! Our little Tracker has no air conditioning as you know and obviously it's owners (us) have no brains.  But we filled our camel backs and off we went.  Let me just say that I am glad we went. However, we've already seen a LOT of Saguaros and so another park  full of them was a bit of a let down.  There were quite a few wildflowers in bloom and that was nice.  But the best part of the 4 hour visit was the Russian Clown Car.  First let me say that to go anywhere in Tucson you have to travel surface streets.  Being a southern Californian and being used to freeways galore this has been mind boggling.  There are only 2 major highways in Tucson......the 10 and the 19.  But they don't go to any of the attractions. It takes over an hour to get to, for example Saguaro National Park, even though it is only 20 miles away from our RV park. Now, back to the clown car.....
Anyway, while we were parked at a turn out for lunch in the sun filled goodness of this park a Ford van pulled up next to us.  The doors flew open and people got out...then more people....then even MORE people. Each was speaking Russian and wearing a cowboy hat.  There was sexy pole dancing blond with a plaid shirt tied above the midriff, sweet Russian Daisy May in really short shorts, REALLY big dark haired guy who looked like a mobster, blond Russian Farm boy, Dark Haired Russian Happy Guy, Gray haired senior citizen guy, another very large blond in a red shirt, and well, you get the picture.  They set up their cameras, jumped on the hood of the van and took a "self portrait" of life in Saguaro National Park as a cowboy!  We offered to take their picture but they said "No. Is fun to do it this way".  And they were right. It WAS fun ...at least for us!
We ended our visit with a hike to an old adobe. By now it was at least 200 degrees in the hottest part of the day. But we did it anyway knowing we wouldn't be back to Saguaro National Park.

And now you too have seen Saguaro National Park.
